The local landscape its villages & history

There are so many attractions & places of interest to visit in the Lot & Dordogne Valley area of Southern France that we certainly cannot list them all but here is a short cross section.

ST-CÉRÉ.  Our local town & is 3 miles away. It is a very lively town with a medieval centre & several very attractive squares. There is a very popular large market every 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month plus a producers market every Saturday & a Sunday market. It also has several brocante, craft & night markets. Every summer it has a music festival together with numerous exhibitions & other cultural events. The Château of St Laurent les Tours is perched high on a hill overlooking St Céré & was owned by the artist Jean Lurçat who left it to the town when he died, ever since it has been open to the public as a workshop museum

As well as the beautiful countryside the Lot & Dordogne Valley area is renowned for its abundance of "Plus Beaux Villages de France". Famous towns & villages such as Rocamadour, Carennac, Loubressac, Autoire, Turenne, Collonges la Rouge, St Cére, Bretenoux & Beaulieu sur Dordogne are all within 30 mins with the equally attractive villages of the Lot valley such as St Cirq-la-Popie within an hour. The Lot also has over 540 protected sites of historic interest & ancient monuments (Château Castelnau for example is the second largest castle in France & only 20 mins away) as well as world famous caverns such as the Gouufre de Padirac.

This is an area of contrasting terrain with the Dordogne valley just to our north & the Lot valley to our south. Between these two beautiful rivers lies the Parc naturel regional des Causses Du Quercy with its deep & steeply wooded valleys & gorges dotted with grottes & gouffre (caves & chasms) that are so typical of the Lot. We are on the edge of an area known as the Ségala which is the highest part of the Lot, the ground gradually rises from here as you head towards the mountains of Cantal & the Massif Central. Those interested in Flora & Fauna will not be disappointed with this natural, quiet & unspoiled environment. Kites, buzzards, kestrels, long eared, tawny & barn owls as well as foxes, red squirrels, pine martin & deer are all seen regularly from or around our house.
